World of Warcraft: A New Player's Perspective

Jeremy Steeves  //  December 18, 2007

Azeroth is nice this time of year.

I
t has been close to a month since we three Game and Player editors took our first steps in Azeroth. Choosing a lowly mage as my character, and being confronted with an overwhelmingly huge world, I've come a long way. World of Warcraft turned three years old last month, and as far as I'm concerned, it's hiding its age well. I know there are those who are skeptical of what the game has to offer; I was one just a short month ago. Take what you'd like from this: I'm not writing to review, or recommend the game, but rather just to share some experiences during my first month in the World of Warcraft.

What, We're Not Good Enough For You?

While wandering through the Elwynn Forest with Aedilhild (Mike's paladin), we came across a male, human warrior. Perhaps it was because we had both chosen to play female characters, but for whatever reason, this player decided that he would follow us wherever we went. Needless to say our new admirer was beginning to get annoying. Luckily this problem was solved promptly when a female, wearing practically nothing, danced by us. Apparently, our warrior found a scantly clad night elf much more appealing then the two of us, as he quickly changed course and pursued his new desire.

My First Griffin Ride

What made this moment so memorable was that I had never experienced anything like it before. Being able to seamlessly travel from one end of the continent to the other, and being able to view everything around you while doing it, is incredible. Though taken for granted as a simple means of transportation now, I'll always remember what it was like the very first time.

Putting the 'Dead' in Deadmines

Just recently, Ed, Mike, and I decided to venture into the Deadmines and cleanse the dungeon once and for all. Previous attempts saw us die quite a few times and, once, give up for the night. This time also saw us running back from the graveyard, but it was our perseverance that carried us through to the end. The many hours of pushing forward were all for a small moment of accomplishment.

'Tis the Season to be Jolly

Snowmen and reindeer? Why, it must be Christmas in the World of Warcraft. Logging on and discovering that the world had been decorated with festive cheer was, for lack of a better word, neat. Even though, from a functional perspective, the event only adds some quests and items, it was another gaming first for me. Celebrating holidays within a video game — who would have thought?

Those were just a few of my personal highlights as I find my way in the World of Warcraft. Whether it's taking up a profession or sailing across the ocean, for a gamer who has never played an MMO, I'm having a lot of fun. I wonder about what lies ahead, as I'm sure there's plenty to look forward to.
