Retail Roundup: January 7, 2009

An old friend rescues an otherwise dismal week.

I

t's another slow week out there in game land, boys and girls. Sure, there are a few PC ports and plenty of puppy-themed masterpieces for Nintendo's consoles, but other than that, it's more of the same. Luckily, there are a few pieces of downloadable software to mention (one of which may actually be worth your time). So here it is, folks — the triumphant return of the Retail Roundup!

For many years, I've been left scratching my head as to what Interpol's contribution to society was — it seemed as though they existed only to be mentioned in DVD copyright warnings. Well, apparently the agency has another calling: starring in its very own video game! Interpol: The Trail of Dr. Chaos is an Xbox Live Arcade title releasing this week. Can you spot the clues hidden within a number of still images? Yikes! Looks like you've got an exciting weekend ahead of you, super sleuth.

Nintendo offers up some downloadable fare of its own this week. In Sandy Beach, players are tasked with building a sand castle which they then must defend against marauding crabs. Some old school goodness is also offered up: Kirby's Dream Land 3, originally for the SNES, arrives on the Virtual Console. Kirby is just as cute (and hungry) as you remember. While this platformer isn't the most challenging Nintendo title out there, it certainly ranks among the most fun.
