Retail Roundup: August 6, 2008

Read any good books lately?

o good games come to those who wait? One can only hope considering the waiting that I and the majority of you will be doing — this week's video game releases look to be a sorry lot indeed. Downloadable fare may appease some: the bizarre (and critically acclaimed) platformer Braid releases on the Xbox Live Arcade whilst the Virtual Console lets us revisit the Sega Genesis "classic" Splatterhouse 2 on Nintendo's hardware. This week's WiiWare release might interest anyone who wonders why they bothered purchasing the Wii Zapper — Gameloft's Wild West Guns provides a number of shooting mini-games dressed up in spurs and ten gallon hats.

Do good games come to those who wait? One can only hope...Things are pretty downhill from there. Developer SouthPeak Interactive, still unconvinced that they've created a stinker, perform CPR on their flailing mess of a shooter, bringing Monster Madness: Grave Danger to the PS3. Unable to nab the official Olympic license, Conspiracy Entertainment decided to truck on with Summer Athletics, yet another mishmash of sporting events for the Wii. The creatively named Puzzler Collection fills a nonexistent hole in the library of the DS. I could keep going, but that just wouldn't be nice.

Long story short: if you're craving something new this week, your best bet is to hit up your respective console's online marketplace. And for the love of God — stay out of your neighborhood Electonics Boutique, unless of course you're picking up that copy of Okami you've always wanted.

(Editor's note: Ed should be seeing the weekly retail releases in a much more positive light just as soon as he's over his summertime cold. Or so we hope...)
