Retail Roundup: July 30, 2008

A look at this week's newest games.

F

ans of Namco's acclaimed fighting series have a lot to celebrate, as this week sees the release of Soulcalibur IV for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Graphics have been improved, controls have been tweaked and a few classic Star Wars characters have been added to the roster. Do lightsabers belong in fighting franchise like Soulcalibur? Even if Yoda and Darth Vader suck, it's got to be better than Masters of Teräs Käsi.

PC gamers in need of a traditional RPG need look no further than THQ's Legend: Hand of God. It looks to be a pretty game, but only a little playtime will reveal if the title's systems have what it takes to separate Legend from the rest of the pack.

Spectral Force 3 isn't the first strategy RPG on the Xbox 360, but it looks to be the most promising. This traditional grid-based fantasy romp from Atlus may introduce a whole new audience to one of the most underrepresented genres on the planet.

As promising as a number of the early Wiiware releases were, Nintendo has proven that not every week can produce a winner. Case in point: Pong Toss: Frat Party Games. This is the first time a drinking game has been ported to a console, and one can only hope that it will be the last.
