Retail Roundup: Jan. 16, 2008

Game and Player: pointing out poor financial choices since 2007.

S

igh. Yup, it's January. For anyone unlucky enough to set foot in a video game retailer this week, my apologies. Why am I apologizing? Because I'm truly doubtful the folks at Ubisoft and Sierra will. Consumer spending continues to drop, and I think I see why.

What do you get when you slap rocket engines onto motorcycles? Why, Nitrobike, of course. As "x-treme" as Mountain Dew's Gamerfuel, this Wii release will have your five-year-old nephew captivated. Everyone else will probably just wonder who at Ubisoft thought motorcycles weren't dangerous enough already.

Was Bejeweled too violent for you? If so, Sierra now offers a fluffy and colorful alternative for download on Xbox Live. It's Boogie Bunnies! Bet you can't wait for your friends to see this one in your "played games" list.

CSI sure was a popular show. In 2004. Ubisoft looks to reignite our passion for this exhausted series with CSI: Hard Evidence on the Wii. Play as your favorite characters from the "hit series" as you solve crimes using the scientific method.

In Miami Nights: Singles in the City, DS gamers take their avatar on a quest for love, fame and fortune in that city of dreams: Miami. Earth to Ubisoft: Crockett and Tubbs left, and they took all the cool kids with them.

Goodness, those titles hurt. As I promised last week, all is not lost in the month of January. Next week will see the release of two very intriguing Wii games as well as the next installment in Criterion's Burnout series. Until then, take this week as an opportunity to become more fiscally responsible.
