One-Liner: Great Expectations

Is Nintendo's marketing setting us up for disappointment?

I

n my recent hands-on preview on the Nintendo 3DS I remarked that I found the system's 3D capability to be a little bit disappointing in person.

But having the seen the E3 debut trailer for the system can you blame me? It displayed the likes of Mario, Bowser, Arwings and even dogs leaping out of the screen in a very in-your-face manner.

This isn't the first time Nintendo has set me up for disappointment. Back in the days when motion-controlled gaming was a fantasy for most, the original concept trailers for the Wii teased us with the likes of players diving around their living rooms as if the console required or could even interpret such overblown physical movements.

Am I simply buying too far into the hype, taking the company's marketing too literally? Or is Nintendo guilty of misconstruing the actual capabilities of their hardware?
