View Full Version : The Hobby Thread

Hey y'all. So I thought it'd be fun to start a thread to share and discuss our respective hobbies that are not game related. I got to thinking about this recently, because since I've started working over at Big Fish - when I get home the last thing I want to do is play games :p. That, and I know we all like to do others things besides playing video games (at least I hope).
So, whether you're a card collector, a quilt maker, a painter, or whatever - share it here. If you've got pictures, that's great. I hope that this thread becomes a place where we all find other things in common other than video games, and that we can share tips and ideas to one another about our other hobbies. I'll get us going:
Calistah and I recently got into RC aircraft. I have an Art-Tech Falcon 3D helicopter, and she has an E-flite Blade 400 helicopter, and an Art-Tech Wind Dragon plane.

Wind Dragon

The Falcon 3D (Chinese build) and the Blade 400 (American build) are really great beginner/intermediate stunt helicopters. Naturally, Calistah is taking to hers a lot more quickly than I am :p. The Wind Dragon is a beginning park flyer that is really stable in-flight, and with a great range. I'm currently waiting on some upgrade parts for my helicopter (mainly carbon fiber blades and some aluminum rotor assembly parts).
It's an expensive hobby, but it's really fun :). I'd like to get a plane at some point too, specifically the Predator RC drone (http://www.rcplaneguide.com/Predator_UAV_4CH_RTF_RC_Plane.html) which can even be outfitted with a still camera.
If you are interested in RC flight, I would recommend Hobby-Lobby.com (http://www.hobby-lobby.com/) as a good source to learn more about and to buy your first aircraft :).

Hahaha Phin you're such a doll. You copy and paste, I'll copy and paste.
Aside from gaming and reading, I spend most of my free time with Warhammer, a tabletop war game with miniatures you assemble, and paint. I haven't really much games of late, but more rather so converting models and painting. When I have time I'll take some pictures and post some of the stuff I have.

Very cool, Zach.
I remember reading a big article on the hobby of RC helicopters. There really is a lot of fun and maintenance behind it. It really does look like a great hobby.
As for me, I got into building computers for a while. I still build my own, but did help friends with theirs for a while.

Wow the description of the predator was bad lol. The RC vehicles do seem fun especially with the modding I would probably do with them. I actually remember using one of my friend's cheap RC aircraft to make something that slid across Ice after his first one whent out of range from the controller and was lost.
I'm in to most things that have to do with PCs, Hardware and Software. Building and programming Robots(at school). I ride my dirtbike when I get the chance. I play paintball a little. I enjoy shooting guns and airguns once in a while.

I like your rock collection! I still have the rocks you gave me!
Anyway...is it weird that I had a dream the other night that this thread was created? That's just...odd.
I have several strange hobbies. Well, my other love besides games is skin/beauty products and writing about them, as well as talking about them. I am also pretty decent at selling them at my store. (www.origins.com) (Even though today was my last day I am still calling it my store)
I collect those Disney enamel pins (http://eventservices.disney.go.com/pintrading/index). Unfortunately I don't get to Disney World or Disneyland very often so I don't get to indulge in this hobby. But I try to make it down there every other year or so and then when I'm there I stock up on the pins.
I also like planning vacations all year round whether I even get to or not.
(Favorite place to go is still Disney World.)
I'm a collector, so once I find something interesting to collect there is no stopping me. I horde candles, disney pins, Vivienne Westwood jewelry, diffuser oil, owls and Studio Ghibli films (I am running out of movies to buy, though). I just started collecting Juicy Couture jewelry as well. Expensive hobbies!

Ah, Dana. I was in your half of the state over the last weekend for Kevin Tomlinson's wedding (I don't know if you remember him he was on our floor). I'll talk about it later.

I collect Star Wars action figures. The last time I counted I own in the neighborhood of 200 something of them. I also have a few dozen from other various things. I would post a picture but they are still at my mothers. My room there has plain white walls and every single action figure I own on the wall.
I collected rocks growing up, but I haven't added anything in the past few years.
I like to make things, via sewing, scrap booking or painting. There are many random things I have made around the apartment, the most recent being a scrapbook I gave to Chris as a Christmas present. I save all the little odds 'n ends from our first year together and made a book out of it. It is super cute and I am so happy how it turned out! I started my curtain project yesterday. I'm making tabbed curtains for the living room and the dining room windows. :)
Chris and I also like to build computers. We also enjoy the occasional trip to the rock climbing gym.

Some may remember a game called "Battledroids" before it became "Battletech". Painted this myself waaaaayyy back. I had to scan this image. I apologize for the slight blurriness.

Keep in mind, Marcus, you're better than about 95 percent of the population. My ability to balance drops off sharply as the board begins to move.
And Wes, BattleDroids — from the makers of BattleTech, the finest patchwork gaming universe ever stitched together! You've got to love the Marauder. 75 tons, two PPCs, two medium lasers and an AC/5. Armor by Valiant Lamellar.

I don't think you suck, Marcus! If I tried to go down the stairs with one of those it would just result in a really big hospital bill. I have the most horrible balance in the world!

Though all I really seem to collect these days is anime and obscure video game releases, I've dabbled in quite a bit: comics, collectible trading game cards, mecha action figures, artwork... the list goes on and on.
Shockman- that Marauder (aka "Officer's Battlepod" for all you Robotech fans) is a thing of beauty :)
Marcus- say what you will. I can only do stuff like that in Tony Hawk (and even then not quite as well)
Anyway, I'll post some pics of my favorite ArtFX Front Mission figures this weekend if I have the chance. This thread rocks!

I used to have tons of action figures from Transformers to Ninja Turtles. Sadly, most of them are all long gone now. I either sold them or gave them away. What was I thinking?
Jes-ka
04-14-2008, 09:36 AM
Yeah, what were you thinking?!
If you don't own a Technodrome, you don't know what you are missing! I'm thinking that maybe Chris and I should go visit my mom sometime just to play with them. :D
As a kid we also had a ton of Batman figures along with a Batcave and the Batmobile. And the Barbie Dolls got along great with them. Sometimes they would hang out with the turtles.
My first action figure was a 1977 R2-D2 figure that I was given as a toddler. I still have him, but he is really beat up and you can see the giant dent in his head from when my dog chewed him up. :\

I have a massive collection of coins. My grandfather has been collecting them since before WW2 and when he passed away my brother and I split them all. One coin my grandfather was obsessed with was the wheat penny. I probably have around 1000 wheat pennies. I also have a Morgan Silver Dollar from 1889 in perfect condition. The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most sought after coins in existence.
