I was uncertain whether or not to pick this one up, considering I'd purchased NHL 07 the previous year. Grog had me hooked, however, as soon as he mentioned the inclusion of AHL teams. There's nothing better than playing as your hometown's very own underdog — here's hoping more sports games (like MLB and NBA) make this leap in the years to come. Go Albany River Rats!!!

Today EA has released an update for NHL that boosted Team Play from 3v3 online, all the way to 6v6.

Now that is the way a sports game should be played.

I really have trouble playing defense in this game and also checking. I always seem to miss them or never check them even when I'm next to them.

I can see what you mean there. It really seems to commit to the check when you push over on the stick. Compared to NHL 07 though, I'm still very impressed with the upgrades and refinements they've made.

It was a big year for EA Sports, and it's been rumored that they're looking to push for completely human controlled online games in the coming years (11 on 11 soccer, for instance). I know that there would be a strain on the servers, but one that would be well worth it.

... I'll see if I can dig up a little more information on the progress of their 09 titles.

I haven't played an NHL game since NHL'98. I remember the good times and kicking butt in that one. I've thought about getting back into playing them again, but just haven't had the time to do so.

Yeah me either. THis is my first dive back into the NHL games since the original NHL game (with no date) and early 90s. I remember when it was a big deal you could potentially break the glass.
