Retail Roundup: August 27, 2008

This week: Mario, Tiger and Japanese RPGs.

F

or a system that's not doing so hot in Japan, the Xbox 360 sure has been getting its fair share of Japanese role-playing games — Square-Enix releases Infinite Undiscovery (the most tragically named RPG in years) while Namco Bandai brings us more of their anime-inspired take on the genre courtesy of Tales of Vesperia. Although some may write off Japan's RPGs as being too linear, one can't help but notice both title's strong console roots.

Role-playing games not your thing? Some old Nintendo friends return to the ballpark this week in Mario Super Sluggers — while Wii owners won't be applauding a great sim experience, Mario and his buddies are sure to bring some fun for the whole family. If simulation is what you're looking for in a sports game, look no further than Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09, which releases for the Xbox 360.

On the PC side of things, we have a pair of racers in Flatout: Ultimate Carnage and GTR Evolution. Also arriving for the keyboard and mouse crowd is The Sims 2 Apartment Life, a game which requires little explanation or fanfare. Not a spectacular week, but far from the washouts of May and June. Happy gaming, ladies and gents.
